Latin Initiative Program

The Latin America Initiative is a formal community outreach program started in 2006 under the auspices of the CEO Richard Daines, MD, George Todd MD, Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Domingo Nunez, MD, the surgical director of the program and currently supported by Evan Flatow, MD, President Mount Sinai Roosevelt, and the Mount Sinai Health System.

Our vision was to position Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Roosevelt as the pre-eminent provider of healthcare to the Latin American community of Manhattan by facilitating access to specialized care in a culturally and linguistically sensitive environment.

We were joined in this endeavor by our partner, Corinthian Medical Association, under the leadership of Ramon Tallaj, MD. The Corinthian IPA is group of over 200 primary care physicians, pediatricians, and dentists primarily based in upper Manhattan and the Bronx. Together, we share the vision of improving the quality of healthcare in our community.

The program has been a big success in facilitating access to our hospital by the community physicians and their large patient roster. Every year we see over two thousand new patients in our specialty clinics and admit over four hundred patients. The relationship is strong and built on trust and the warm relations between us. Our efforts have also led to collaboration in other areas including charitable medical missions jointly sponsored by the Hospital and the Corinthian IPA as well as an academic affiliation with UNIBE Medical School in Santo Domingo.

We expect this program to have continued success as we explore other areas of collaboration.
