Division of Trauma and Critical Care

St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Department of Surgery has a highly experienced staff in Trauma and Critical Care.

The Trauma Center at St. Luke's Hospital is one of the five state-designated Level I regional trauma centers in Manhattan. Under the direction of Raymond V. Wedderburn, MD, FACS, the trauma service cares for patients with single & multiple system injuries. The trauma team (PGY-5, 4, 1) responds for all patients meeting specific trauma criteria and respond to the Emergency Department for initial involvement in the management of all injured patients. All trauma patients requiring hospitalization are admitted to one of two designated surgical services at the St. Luke's site. The care of each trauma patient is supervised by one of seven attending trauma surgeons. Critically injured patients are admitted to the designated SICU at St. Luke's (SL) which also serves as the trauma ICU. As violent crime has decreased in NYC, the number of penetrating injuries has decreased but the service continues to provide exposure to a good mix of blunt and penetrating injuries.

St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital Center (SLRHC) is fully commited to the care of critically ill and injured patients. As such, The SICU at each site is fully staffed (24/7) by surgical and anesthesia housestaff with complete attending staff backup. The SICU at SL is a designated 9 bed unit, staffed by board certified intensivists in surgery and anesthesiology. The unit serves a mix of patients undergoing major general surgical as well as trauma procedures. Additionally, patients with surgical conditions requiring nonoperative management in a critical care setting are admitted to this unit. Examples of the above include severe pancreatits and multiple trauma. The SICU at Roosevelt Hospital is part of a mixed medical-surgical ICU. The unit is fully staffed by surgeons commited to the care of criticall ill patients. This unit cares for a large number of vascular as well as neurosurgery patients in addition to postoperative general surgical patients.
